“On-Premis” describes a way to deliver software that enables the user to operate the software by them selves. The software can run on an owned Computer, a Server, a data-center or on rented parts of such: from a “naked” server-rack up to a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).
Advantages for the operators are:
- data sovereignty
- a maxiumum of control and direct responsibility
- integration within the operator’s IT-landscape
Drawbacks are:
- higher costs due to infrastructure and staff
- a lack of convinience
The trend in IT points away from On-Premise solutions towards SaaS-solutions in the cloud. Especially for (energy-)providers the advantages of redundancy and de-centralization outweigh any drawbacks.
